Sock Classes
The multiple versions of toe-up and top-down classes offer you the opportunity to repeat a class without repeating it verbatim. I've also included the description for a new class,
The Math of Socks, a two hour class. We don't have it on the schedule, but it could be an evening course, or perhaps on a Saturday after the other sock class.
Please call if you are interested in The Math of Socks and we'll try to get it on the schedule.
5/24 - Toe-Up v.2
6/21 - Top-Down v.2
7/12 - Toe-Up v.1
7/19 - Intermediate - Toes and Heels
8/16 - Top-Down v.1
Materials Two circular needles, either two 16" or one 16" and one 24" OR a set of double-point needles, suggested needle size 3. I like Addi or Addi Turbo needles over other brands for their flexible cables. Otherwise they might try soaking their cables (but not the needles if wooden or bamboo) in hot water to soften the cables prior to class. One ball of DK weight yarn, medium or light color and very plain. Stitch markers and craft needles are useful, but optional.
Beginner-Level Socks
Toe up socks
In this class we will learn a cast-on method suitable for starting at the toe, how to manage two circular needles, and how to make a short row heel flap, finishing with a bind off method that keep the top stretchy.
Version 1 will use Judy's Magic cast-on, a garter heel, a leg rib pattern and the EZ sewn bind off.
Version 2 will use a provisional cast-on, a short-row toe, a short row heel, a different leg rib pattern and the K2tog bind off method.
Top down socks
Learn how to cast-on and join the knitting into a circle, construct a traditional sock using a heel flap and gusset.
Version 1 will use a K2tog join, a leg rib variation, a round heel and a Kitchener stitch seamless toe.
Version 2 uses a criss-cross join, a leg rib variation, a square heel and a star bind off toe.
Intermediate-Level Socks
Toes and Heels
Come and explore variations in toes and heels. Different traditional, ethnic knitters developed different ways of fitting knitting around the heel and making a comfortable toe. Be inspired to try a new toe or heel in your next sock.
Math of Socks 2 hours, $25
Aha! Don't let the title scare you. If you can balance your check book (and even if you can't), you'll be a master of numbers and your knitting at the finale of this class. Bring a tape measure, a calculator (or cell phone or anything that does basic math), pencil, and a 2"x2" swatch of sock yarn knitted in the round.
