GREETINGS

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great summer. I’ll be glad when this hot weather is over. We are finally finished remodeling and we’re settled. I hope everyone has had a chance to see the finished store. We just love it.

We made our annual trip to Columbus this year for our trade show. Boy, did I find a lot of wonderful yarns and new lines. Again, the yarn companies outdid themselves this year.

What’s hot? Three things really stood out this year. Felting is so big and everyone is making those cute little purses with all kinds of interesting yarns. Shawls in all shapes and sizes, using novelty yarns and lace weight yarns. Luxury yarns are everywhere. We will have silks, cashmeres, Pashmina, Qiviut, and lots of luxury blends.

I hope everyone has started their Christmas projects already. It’s never too early to start.

We’re already receiving a lot of our new Fall lines already. We also have planned a lot of trunk shows and workshops this year.

It’s going to be a wonderful season. Hope to see you all soon.

Janice

CLASSES 2005 (All completed)

Sally Cohan who has been teaching knitting at Filati for the past few years will be leaving and moving to Missouri. We will miss her and wish her the best.

Diane Ramsey will be teaching on Saturdays and in the meantime we are looking for more teachers. If you would like to teach or know someone who does, please give me a call. Our class schedule will remain the same until we find more teachers.

I still encourage you all to come and sit around the table and knit and have a good time. It’s a good way to get away from all the stress of the day and share ideas with others and get inspired to knit beautiful projects and make new friends.

If you would like to teach call Janice at 916-415-9430.

WHAT'S NEW AT FILATI FALL 2005 (last year)

Adrienne Vittadini

She has come out with two new yarns. “Antonia” a wool/acrylic blend and “Donata” an

alpaca/acrylic blend. Also look for new colors in “Paloma” and “Trina”. Her new book has seventeen new garments to knit. It’s beautiful.

Artful Yarns

A new yarn called “Heavenly” which is an mohair/nylon/acrylic blend. It’s variegated with metallic running through it. There are also new colors in “Broadway” and “Portrait”.

K1-C2

Lots of luxury yarns. “Douceur et Soie” is a beautiful silk/kid mohair blend. Another is

“Ambrosia” which is an alpaca/cashmere/silk blend. They also have designed a wonderful kit called “Twisted Color “ kit. It’s a mobius.

Noro

They have come up with two new yarns this Fall. One is called “Aurora”, a silk/kid mohair/wool blend with metallic running through it. The other is “Silver Thaw” which is a wool/angora blend. There are also two new books that are stunning.

Rowan

They brought out four new yarns this year. “Soft Baby” is a wool/nylon/cotton blend. A new book called “Little Treasures” goes with this yarn. They are contemporary designs for new-borns to 5 years old. “Big Wool Fusion” is big wool only in pastels. “Kidsilk Spray” is variegated and “Kidsilk Night” has metallic running through it.

Mountain Colors

This is always one of my favorites. This year they have come out with five new colors.

We will be carrying the usual: merino ribbon, 4/8’s wool, moguls, mountain goat, cashmere, barefoot, and weaver’s wool. This year we have added the alpaca/wool blend.

We also will be carrying a large assortment of kits.

Tahki/Stacy Charles

They have three new yarns: “Multicolor” and “Cambridge” are beautiful variegated yarns. “Big Tweedy” is a bulky cashmere blend. Four new books offer a wide assortment of patterns for very fashion forward, sophisticated knitting.

Berroco

Three new yarns this year. “Foliage” is a wool roving that changes colors. “Softy” is a thick and thin nylon that is very soft. “Runway” is a metallic novelty that would be great added to sweaters or scarves.

Plymouth

This year they have added lots of new colors to; “Sinsation”, “Baby Alpaca Grande”, and “Foxy”. We will also be adding some new baby yarns. They are really soft and cuddly.

Fiesta

“ La Boheme” is one of our most popular yarns, and this year they have taken this yarn and run metallic with it. It is just stunning. It’s a must see.

FALL WORKSHOPS 2005

Nancy England

Nancy England is a Northern Calif. Based designer of one of a kind knitted garments. She has been teaching and designing for 35 years both nationally and internationally. She has also had her designs published in popular knitting magazines.

Socks-Socks-Socks (6 hours)

This class included knitting in the round on four needles, turning the heel, working short rows, making the instep, picking up stitches and paired decreases, and closing the toe with kitchener stitching. A good class for those who want to learn to make socks.

Stripes, picture knits, intarsia, and fair isle knitting. The use of color patterns is one of the most stimulating exercises in the art of knitting. You will receive patterns for graph, stripe, fair isle and color block knitting. The is a work hard…but very rewarding class.

Cables add long lines or bulk to your silhouette. Can you add cable stitches to the pattern you are using? Learn some new and unusual cables. Easy and different techniques. Work with or without a cable needle. This class will explore some unusual uses of the cable in a hand knit. Use cables in unexpected places. You will receive six cable patterns and the directions to incorporate these cables into your knitting.

Knitting From the Top Down (6 hours)

Why knit from the top down? There are no seams to sew together and you can try it on at any time. The pattern and yarn options are without limit. She will be bringing in some of her work to show the class. Patterns for top down sweaters are included with one new pattern for a poncho. This will be a fun class.

Lorna Miser

Lorna Miser is the founder of Lorna’s Laces. She is now designing for dozens of yarn companies and publishers as well as teaching and speaking across the country. She focuses on designs that are easy to make but also have something fun or surprising. She loves yarns, buttons and designs that have interesting colors and textures.

Using any yarn imaginable, you can knit a purse, tote, or bag and line it without a sewing machine or felting. Learn to use fusible adhesives, ready-made canvas totes, quilting fabrics, and fabric glues to accomplish this. Examples of zipped, buttoned, snapped, tied and flapped closures will be displayed. Turn a skein of fancy novelty yarn into a eye catching purse you’ll love. You will complete a purse in class.

Button, Button, No One Has the Right Button! (3 hours)

You’ve hunted far and wide for the perfect button to finish off your sweater. Everything’s too big, small, cheap, expensive, fancy, plain, or the wrong color. You have other options. This class gives you the creative options to: knit matching buttons, paint, glue, embroider, crochet, mold, bake, use unusual items around the house or use supplies from you local craft store. In this three hour class we’ll see dozens of unique buttons and do some hands on creating. No special painting, embroidery or artistic talent needed for this class.

Barbara Allen

Barbara Allen is a fiber artist who enjoys knitting, quilting and needlepoint. She has been knitting for over 50 years and has taught classes in all three areas. She is also a designer and has designed many of the garments and accessories she has made. Her newest passion in knitting is felting. She has just finished three new designs for felted totes and small bags.

Felted Purses (4 hours)

In this class you will learn to make a felted mini-bag with a flap. You will learn shaping, I-cord, appliqués, and numerous felting techniques. Felting is so hot this year that these classes will fill up fast.

Ginger Luters

Ginger Luters is a Calif. based designer of knitted wearable art and a nationally known creative knitting teacher. Her work focuses on the exciting use of color, unusual construction approaches, and simple, elegant garment shapes….all of which are evident in her dramatic knitted clothing. You have probably seen her designs in Knitters magazine. She is also very excited about her published book called “Module Magic”.

Modular Knitting (6 hours)

Based on Ginger’s book, “Module Magic”, you’ll knit samples of many modular shapes (squares, rectangles, triangles, and stripes), joined together as you knit. Then you will go on to consider how these shapes can be combined and made in to garment. This is a really fun class and a fun technique.

Understanding Mosaic Knitting (6 hours)

One of Ginger’s favorite techniques, you’ll review the basics of this slip stitch technique, then to on to explore variations both in colorways and in shapes. You will also look at the process involved in designing your own mosaic patterns. This is a fun class, because a slip stitch pattern is so simple, yet it looks like you did something very complicated.

Pat Clark

Pat has been knitting since she was 10 years old. She lives in Sonora and has been traveling and teaching knitting at various yarn stores and after school knitting classes for children. Among her favourite projects are anything with beads.

Beaded Bag (4 hours)

Janice DeCarlo

Janice DeCarlo is the owner of Filati. She has been knitting since she was nine years old. She does a lot of finishing and blocking for customers and has been asked to teach this as a workshop. This Fall she will be teaching two finishing classes.

Finishing & Blocking (4 hours)

In this class you will learn all the techniques to properly assemble a garment. From weaving in ends, the mattress stitch for sewing together seams, picking up stitches around a neck or along the front of a cardigan. In the last hour you will learn how to block a sweater.

This is a very valuable class, because how good your finished sweater looks has everything to do with the finishing and blocking.

The classes above were all the 2005 classes - check out this year's classes while they are still available.

(916) 415-9430 Limit of 8 students per class.

For all 6 hour classes a one hour lunch break will be provided.

Fees must be paid in advance to reserve your place. If you sign up for a class and do not show up, or call to cancel, you will be charged the class fee. Cancellations must be at least one week before the class. Workshops may be cancelled if not filled. We will contact you in advance of the classes regarding supplies and homework.

SUCCESSFUL KNIT FOR HER CURE 2005

Saturday September 24th 2005- we all made a difference.

Filati again sponsored a very important event with Muench Yarns.

The event was presented by "Knit For Her Cure", an organization that believes in lifting the spirits of women with cancer, which is the prime importance of their recovery.

This event inspired women to purchase and knit soft, comforting scarves to be gifted to women with cancer in their community. It's like sending a big warm hug to someone who really needs it. There was a large selection of scarf and hat kits.

Each kit included yarn, pattern instructions, and a gift card for the knitter to sign. 100% of the net profits went to women's cancer research. Filati also donated $10 for every kit sold at the event.

Whether the kits were purchased to be given to a friend or loved one with cancer, or worn personally, their purchase helped to fund much needed research.

There were door prizes, refreshments and knitting demonstrations.
